Koh Samui Maps
. . . travel and tips
The quickest and easiest way to reach Koh Samui is by air. It's only 80 minutes from Bangkok with 12 flights starting at 07:30am and ending at 20:10pm. You can also fly direct to Samui from Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket and Singapore.
Here is a map of Koh Samui that you can zoom onto

Thailand A much slower but more romantic way is to go the 700km journey by overnight bus from Bangkok to Suratthani. Also it is much cheaper and more adventurous, especially if you have kids - they will love the journey! You can get tickets onboard or at the major bus stations. If you are going via Khao San Road, you can catch an overnight bus departing in the evening, to all southern destinations - including Samui. You will stop very early in the morning at Suratthani - which is the island's nearest mainland port. From there you transfer to a local bus for a quick ride to the ferryboat that takes you on a lazy two-hour journey directly to your own little island paradise. As we said before; quite romantic!
Remember; not all buses are the same! Spending just a few baht more can make a big difference to comfortable travelling. The best deals are probably the overnight "Super VIPs." These air-conditioned double decker vehicles have toilets, seats that lean back quite far with leg rests at the bottom, and they also supply blankets for the journey. All buses stop at least once for refreshment, but little or no food or drink is served on board. A movie video is almost always shown on an overhead TV, and the volume makes sleep decidely difficult! Try cotton wool! However once the film ends around 10:00 pm, if you're lucky, you may doze fitfully through much of the night.

Koh Samui is a real tiny island even smaller than the Isle of Wight - with an indiginous population of 48,000 compared to 124,577 inhabitants for the Isle of Wight.
Nathon is the business and administrative center of Koh Samui and is located in the north-west corner of the island. This a reasonable size town and meets the requirements of modern businesses with government offices, police headquarters, business banking facilities, lawyers, accountants etc.
The most developed area - and the busiest tourist hangout is Chaweng Beach (top-right of the island) with its incredible white beach. Lamai (south of Chaweng) is the next busiest town and beach and the Lamai beach slopes steeper into the sea. A vast majority of the discos, bars and restaurants are also within Chaweng and Lamai.
The most undeveloped locations are Maenam and Bohput on the north coast and Chang Mong in the north east which are all much quieter and smaller than Chaweng and Lamai. On the west coast there is Taling Ngam, while on the south-west coast there is Phang Ka, Thong Krut and Bang Kao where the land is cheap and ripe for general investment purposes. There are also about 16 other quiet beaches spread around the island.
